About two weeks ago we met up with our good friend Liza Brunetti in Canoa. Liza (aka Zeebra) had this idea that we could create a work of art on a piece of cardboard while eating dinner at the Surf Shak. So, we purchased some cardboard and Liza and Mary sketched out a lizard creation that had diamonds on his back and circles around wherever we had rested our drinks or dripped drops from the glasses as we ate! I had my doubts, but did contribute some drips and glass condensation rings (what an artist I am!)
Lisa wrote up a blog post relating the experience and the work we did over breakfast the next morning at the Amalur Hostel. See her post at: http://playamart.wordpress.com/2013/07/18/walk-first-then-hop-skip-jump/ What emerged was primarily an iguana, but the feet were distinctively those of gecko’s. Lisa wanted the creation to be, “house-broken” so she did not add the long claws that iguanas have opting to go for pad-like gecko feet! Mary and I took to calling the creation an, “Iguanecko.”
We created quite a scene in the courtyard of the Amalur and our friend Lorena got this picture of us all working away.
Lisa was working on a new sign to direct people from the main street up to the Amalur Hostel.
From the initial sketch complete with my water drops and glass rings:
Mary added diamond shapes down the back and Lisa worked to paint the black line outline.
We all pitched in to paint areas getting the iguanecko to this point before calling it a day and seeing Lisa off on the bus to Jama.
Mary and I travel by bus and since this creation is about 20″ X 28″ in size, the next trick was to get the work in progress home without bending it so that Mary (and a little bit of John) could finish it.
We made it and Mary worked many more hours altering a few details and painting away on the circles, diamonds, and background.
Whenever I suggest that a picture Mary is working on is finished she tells me that it is not done until the initials or signature is affixed. Well, finally yesterday Mary agreed that the iguanecko was ready for signing!
You have to have good vision, but Mary and Zeebra and even John are noted as contributors to this creation that now looks like this:
We still have to find a way to mount this beauty and I do not know where it will hang, but it is guaranteed to brighten whatever room it hangs in!
Life is good in Ecuador!
Wow! Eye popping colors. And I’m laughing at Lisa getting the bright idea that you could paint a picture on a piece of cardboard and use the drips and circles from the glasses to incorporate into your painting. Gorgeous!

Thanks Debbie. It was fun and I’m sure the others in the restaurant thought we we’re just a bunch of crazy gringos. Never know what’s going to happen when you hang out with zeebra 🙂

ah poor burro 😦 Thanks Lisa, did you notice the changes we made? I think the eyes are ok, but maybe they need a bit more white. I could have worked on it longer and probably will before we hang it on the wall but still need to find a protective spray for acrylics and for pencil. Hopefully this week when we go to Portoviejo.
Good luck with the tramites, we’ll be praying.
Didn’t need to fix the words, understood you perfectly.

The signatures are teeny, but they complete this work of art. Gorgeous iguanecko. Prettiest I’ve ever seen! ;-D

thanks Gemma. Considering all the unusual species of animals here in Ecuador, wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something similar hiding out in the Amazon, but would really be shocking if it had pink coloring..lol Yeah, they are small, had to wear my reading glasses when I added them
