Right after Mary and I first moved to Ecuador in December 2011 we wrote regular update letters to our family where we tried to explain how pleasantly different things are here.  I remember one day in mid-January when I was drafting a letter to my family from a hammock in the ramada area of our old home.  (Note – that was in mid-January and I was wearing a bathing suit lying in a hammock!)  I was trying to explain some of the different things I was seeing at that moment and I looked up at a bush with large leaves alongside the edge of the ramada.  The plant had green, yellow, red, orange, and dark red (almost black) leaves – all on the same healthy plant at the same time!

I learned later that the bush is called a Garden Croton or Variegated Croton.
