September 25th was Mary’s birthday. The day started early with a phone call from our taxi driver friend, Roberth singing and telling us he hoped Mary had a very special birthday. The day took off from there and we have hardly had time to sit and relax since that day nearly two weeks ago! We have been many places since then, but today we just wanted to share some memories from that day.
Last year we went all out and had a big party at Vivianna’s with sixty or seventy guests. This year our big celebration was to visit with our daughter, Carrie who would be arriving a few days after Mary’s birthday, so we kept it simple on the actual day. We have gotten to be pretty good friends with a cake maker in town, so she really went all out on Mary’s cake.
I had asked for the cake to be bonita con mucho flores (pretty with lots of flowers) but I was very pleasantly surprised to see this beauty! We brought the cake over to a local restaurant (Vivianna’s) to see if anyone would show up to help us eat it. Even gringos follow the Ecuadorian habit of arriving a bit late. At the time we were scheduled to start, it was just Mary and her cake (and a photographer) wondering how we would eat that big old cake!
But, within minutes a few of our friends arrived.
We had specified that no gifts were expected (although a few of our friends ignored that and gave Mary some nice gifts) because Mary’s big present was set to arrive from the hallway beneath this sign in Guayaquil on September 29th.
Carrie has had some issues with her back, so the airline graciously provided a wheel chair to help her navigate the halls and ramps, but that did not interfere with the Mother and Daughter reunion! Here is a picture of Mary opening her gift.
Life is especially good in Ecuador with Carrie visiting!
