I guess that I lied last week when I said that I would try something other than a portrait for this week’s time out sketch. But, I decided to keep trying to stretch myself and see if I could do a person’s face a little better. I used a sketch instruction book and tried to draw a mountain man in authentic jamboree gear.
I discovered the danger of trying to erase dark shading when I tried to rework the shading by the eye. Apparently the paper texture changes with the erasing and then the new shading does not take well. I am going to try to do as Lisa instructs next time and avoid erasing at all so that I do not get the blotchy look like I got by the left eye.
But, the shading in the cap and in the face turned out pretty well. I had fun with the neck piece and the shading in the jacket.
In all, I was pretty pleased and think that I am getting a bit better. I am still having fun and appreciate Lisa’s challenge to take some time out to relax with drawing. See: http://playamart.wordpress.com/2013/06/26/timeout-for-art-happy-in-nature/. After seeing Lisa’s work this week, I will probably try a “nature” picture next week. Thanks for the inspiration!
Life is good in Ecuador.
