This last week we have been busy working around the house and getting Jan’s home ready for her return, so we have not published as many posts as we usually do. In spite of the busy days I did take a little time out for pencil sketching as we have been challenged to do by Lisa (aka – Zeebra) – See: http://playamart.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/timeout-for-art-concentration/.
I continue to work on learning new ways to use shading to create depth and texture. I hope you like it.
I know it is beginning art, but I am trying this because it is fun and a relaxing diversion. Even if I do not get much better, drawing is a good creative outlet for me.
Once again, thanks to Lisa for throwing out the challenge and to Mary for her encouragement and tips.
Life is good in Ecuador.
Practice makes perfect John and you are doing a wonderful job. Don’t sell yourself short.

Wow! Your shading is really, really good. You have the depth down pat! I look forward to Timeout for Art every week because I absolutely love watching the progress of my fellow “artists in the making”. Great job, John. 🙂

You’ve gotten a nice sense of the different textures with the smooth feathers on the back, the shorter, more bristly feathers at the tops of the legs, and the scaly skin of the neck. I like the way the feet firmly grip the rock.

Many people think that the vulture is ugly but I have come to know and love them as “nature’s garbage collectors”. We have several nesting in the campo behind us and I love watching them soar on the rising air currents. Lovely drawing! 🙂

Yes, we have turkey vultures soaring on the up-drafts behind our home every day. They are amazingly graceful birds in flight. Glad you liked the picture.

That is pretty darn impressive for “beginning” art. It would put me four or five notches below beginning…very impressive. Thanks for sharing. That’s inspiring your learning a new skill at 61!
