Mary’s brother Jim told us that we begin too many of our letters and posts by saying, “Mary and I were walking on the beach…” He found it a bit disconcerting to read about our discoveries on the beach while surrounded by an Ohio winter scene.
Well Jim – Sorry, but…
Mary and I were walking on the beach this morning and I commented to her about how different the beach looks each day. Sometimes it is the sun rising or setting, the unique cloud formations, the birds flying or on the beach, the fishing activity, or other beach visitors, but it is always different.
Today the beach was wide open with little or no other activity going on.
We walked up near the point. As we were walking back we noticed some different types of markings in the sand the water had left behind as the tide receded.
I know – at first blush you are thinking, “Just looks like plain old sand to me.” But, for several hundred feet of coastline we started to see what we are calling, “Nature’s sketch pad.” Upon closer examination I think you will agree that Mother Nature was busy this morning sketching her plans for new forests. Here are some of our favorite scenes.
There were tall trees,
and trees growing up from rocks,
While most of the sketches resembled bare trees in winter, the shadows on this sketch gave the impression that it was leafing out in early spring.
Indeed, whole forests of tree sketches blanketed our empty beach!
So, it is true whether one is looking up or looking down, the magnificent playa provides a unique and beautiful view every day. God is good to us to allow us to live here where,
Life is good in Ecuador!
Great post. I noticed the exact same thing while running on the beach today. Thanks for documenting this. Nice pictures.

Thanks David.. first time I saw anything like this in the 15 months we’ve been here. You always see the snail trails and they at times look like art work 🙂

they are all beautiful! i often saw images like that at playa san miguel/costa rica. long ago there were field designers for a carpet company who were always requesting ‘organic images.’ surely images like yours were what they needed!

As I was typing this post I said to Mary a few times – “Lisa is really going to like these pictures.” I thought a few looked like ceibo trees. All of them were intriguing!

No rain here yet – I had to water the garden today – we could use a bit of rain (but not too much!)

For me one of the beauties of growing older has been the change in priorities that allows me to take the time to wonder. I feel like a little kid sometimes crrawling on the ground and it feels good!

These are terrific artwork of God’s. We are blessed to live in a world of such intricate beauty and nature. Many people don’t recognize it, sadly.

Sadly most of us (myself included) are so busy living life that we race by the beauty that surrounds us without noticing. One of the great blessings of retirement is that we do have the time to simply sit and notice life around us, Life is good.
