Some weeks ago we noticed an Ecuadorian ground dove sitting on a nest which she and her mate had made on the top of the brick and concrete wall near our pool area. Workmen were working on a new ramada right next to that wall and the dove seemed unphased by the activity and sat patiently waiting for her eggs to hatch. I got the following picture of the two new babies on the morning that they were hatched.
Within two days the babies were already moving around the nest and thinking about flying away!
Less than a week after they were born the chicks flew off and I never saw the birds at that nest again.
Last weekend we were up in our bedroom in the morning and we noticed that a dove was on a potted plant we had on our deck digging around in the dirt. The dove flew off after a while and we thought nothing more of that until a few days later when we saw two doves back making a nest under our geranium.
The male bird (we guess) brings twigs to the female at the nest.
Together they work to arrange the twigs properly.
Then dad flies off to get more twigs.
Mom puts the finishing touches on her new nest.
The mother dove has been sitting on that nest for the last two days. We are not sure if she laid her eggs yet, but we hope to have new little chicks outside our window in the near future. We will keep you posted.
This is so beautiful that I almost cry!

Coo…l. 🙂 It’s neat that so many of he animals there seem comfortable about being up close to people. I think near total separation from nature is one of the reasons the big cities here are filled with kooky folks. Seeing life and the creation up close is theraeputic.

I believe you are right, although being close to animals has not worked to keep me from being a bit kooky! Love you, Dad and Mary
